The history of the river "Ganges" Wood carving from Nepal
Three wooden panels explaining the history of the river Ganges from a Hindu perspective
BhagÍratha
Details of the Golden Well (Sundhara) at the palace of Bhaktapur, founded by King Jitamitra Malla in 1678. The panel in the center depicts a sage blowing the conch shell trumpet with his right hand and holding a lotus bud in his left hand. Through his penance practice, BhagÍratha caused the Ganga (the Ganges river) to descend from heaven to earth. Above him appears the personified goddess with a garland. Bhagiratha is framed by a pair of dragons and a pair of serpents (naga and nagini) with human torsos in the posture of blessing and greeting. The two small panels vary the theme, with the sage emptying a vessel above his head and holding a lotus style in his inward-facing hand.
