The Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaisajyaguru, is a central figure in Buddhism, symbolising healing and well-being. He is particularly well known in Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan medicine. Bhaisajyaguru has a blue body and holds a bowl of healing nectar in his left hand and a myrobalan branch with three fruits in his right, which symbolically neutralise the three inner poisons: Anger, greed and ignorance. These poisons cause mental unrest and the resulting physical and mental illnesses.

Before his enlightenment, the Medicine Buddha took twelve vows in which he promised to free all the sick and suffering from their afflictions. He is often depicted to the left of Buddha Shakyamuni and associated with the East. His "birthday" is celebrated on the 30th of the 9th month in the Chinese calendar, and in China many temples honour him as one of the "three great healers" together with the Bodhisattva of Sunlight and the Bodhisattva of Moonlight.

The practice of Medicine Buddha includes meditation and mantras to support the healing process and strengthen the self-healing powers. He is considered a powerful source of healing and is often associated with the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara.
