Green Tara – Liberator and Protector in Tibetan Buddhism
Green Tara (Tibetan: Dölma) is considered one of the most important female deities in Vajrayana Buddhism. She embodies the active compassion of all Buddhas and is invoked as a “swift helper” who grants protection from internal and external dangers.
In the classical Dharma scriptures, especially in the Praise of the 21 Taras, she is praised for her ability to overcome fears and remove obstacles on the spiritual path. Each of the 21 emanations represents a specific quality – from fearlessness to wisdom to healing power.
Green Tara sits with one leg extended – a symbol of her readiness to act immediately. Her right hand shows the mudra of generosity, while her left hand holds a blue utpala lotus flower – a sign of purity and compassion.
Her mantra, “Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha,” is widely used and recited daily by practitioners to request protection, clarity, and spiritual guidance.
