Buddha Shakyamuni, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is regarded in Tibetan Buddhism as the historical Buddha and founder of the teachings. He attained perfect enlightenment (bodhi) and taught the Dharma to liberate beings from the cycle of suffering (samsara).
His wisdom is highlighted in numerous Tibetan scriptures. The Dhammapada says:
“The mind is the source of all things. Purify the mind, and you will be free from suffering.”
The Sutra of Golden Teachings describes him as the embodiment of boundless compassion and perfect wisdom. His teachings on emptiness (shunyata), cause and effect (karma), and the eightfold path are central elements in Tibetan Buddhism.
Buddha Shakyamuni is particularly revered in rituals and meditations in which his mantra Om Muni Muni Maha Muniye Soha is recited – an expression of deepest reverence for his enlightened presence.
