The Bodhisattva Manjushri - whose honorary name is called "The Gentle", "The Glorious", "The Melodious" - is the embodiment of knowledge and learning, he is called the Buddha of Wisdom or Wisdom Buddha. He is the patron of scholars and students, giving inspiration and knowledge when invoked. With his flaming sword he drives away the demons of darkness, and brings light to the darkness of ignorance. His short tantra has been classified as among the most advanced teachings of the Buddha. In his four-armed appearance, with only one face - there are several forms of this deity - he holds the sword, and on a lotus branch the book Prajnaparamita, the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom, Buddha's most profound interpretation of the ultimate nature of reality. His second pair of arms includes a bow and arrow in his hands, as a sign of the purposefulness of his speech, and spiritual clarity.
